Cane Quest is an orientation and mobility competition developed and sanctioned by the Braille Institute of America as a way to empower and celebrate visually-impaired students while bringing the entire community together. In the spring of 2022, Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) in Richland School District’s Special Education department sought communications support and collaboration to promote the first sanctioned Cane Quest event in the Pacific Northwest.
Various materials and resources were developed to promote the event ahead of time to eligible students and families. This included a permanent web presence to disseminate information, such as forms and a frequently-asked questions (FAQ) resource. Participants were recognized and celebrated via photography and videography the day of and after the event.
TVI staff were very pleased with the video and have actively shared it among the visually-impaired community. One of the students interviewed in the piece was so moved by being included that he made sure everyone in his family and in his friend group viewed it.
